Product Care Instructions - Pro Elite Down Apparel

Mountain Designs Pro Elite represents the pinnacle of our technical gear, refined through more than 40 years of field testing and using the world's most advanced and innovative technical fabrics. Mountain Designs recommends the following care instructions:

Cleaning Your Pro Elite Alpine Down Apparel

  • Before washing, remove any fur trims (only required on select styles).
  • Machine wash your down apparel with warm water at 40°C on gentle cycle, using pure soap only. Do not use bleach, fabric softener, conditioners or stain removers as they can affect the garment's performance. Avoid a top loading machine with agitator as its washing process is too rough on the garment.
  • Rinse thoroughly.
  • The garment will be heavy when wet so take care handling it. Tumble dry the garment on low heat. Alternatively, dry it flat. Avoid wringing the garment to remove excess water but if you need to, lightly squeeze it out.
  • Do not dry clean or iron your down apparel.

Restoring DWR in Your Pro Elite Alpine Down Apparel

  • The majority of Mountain Designs down products are DWR-treated. The best way to tell if the garment needs re-proofing is to spray some water on the outer fabric - if it beads up and rolls away it is ok, if it appears to soak into the fabric then it is not ok. Every 6-12 months or when the shell is no longer beading off water, you may consider restoring the DWR finish on the outer fabric.
  • Apply a spray-on or wash-in DWR treatment as per the instructions of the care product supplier.

Restoring Loft in Your Pro Elite Alpine Down Apparel

  • For down apparel, loft can be restored by tumble drying the garment on low or no heat with three tennis balls. The tennis balls will help to break up the down clumps and fluff up the down clusters. Shaking the garment will also help to restore the loft.

Storing Your Pro Elite Alpine Down Apparel

  • Store your down apparel uncompressed and hanging up. This helps to keep the insulation spread evenly, and maintain its loft.
  • Only store down apparel when it is completely dry.
  • If the down apparel is packed in a stuff sack for a long time, it is very important to remove the garment from storage and air it in advance of its next use, to ensure the garment has regained its full loft. This is especially recommended for the Pro Elite Alpine series with 800 and 850 loft.

General Tips & Notes

  • If in doubt, check the care label on the inside of your down apparel and follow the care instructions provided.
