When in Rome

When in Rome

If Rome is on your bucket list, you're in for a rich cultural treat. Rome is one of the most visited cities in the world and it's not hard to see why. This impressive destination is home to globally influential art, iconic architectural masterpieces and delicious gelato. We've put together a couple of things to do in Rome to get you started on your itinerary!

Things To Do In Rome

The Colosseum

How could we not start with one of the most impressive and historically rich structures in the city. The Colosseum is known for its ancient gladiator battles as well as being an iconic symbol of the city of Rome and its history-rich background.

Things To Do In Rome

Throw a Coin into the Trevi Fountain

There is a lot more to this stunning fountain than looks. Legend has it that a coin thrown over the shoulder will ensure a trip back to Rome. This dates back to ancient times when Romans would throw coins into water to please the gods of water so they would return safely home. If you're seeking love, throw in a second coin and, if you're game, a third for a wedding. The coins from the Trevi Foundation are collected each day and given to a charity that helps Rome's needy get groceries.

Things To Do In Rome

Take a Walking Tour Around Rome

A common thing you'll see while exploring Rome, or any major European city for that matter, is the large number of tour guides walking around the city centre and the big tourist attractions. With the majority of Rome's landmarks situated within close distance of each other, opting for a walking tour to tick them all off your bucket list is a stress-free way to find them. Pack a security travel bag to keep your belongings close to your body and safe in the crowded areas that are known for pick-pocketing.

Visit St Peter's Basilica

Technically, St Peter's Basilica is in Vatican City, but this is something you don't want to miss while you're exploring Rome (you can even stop by on your walking tour, it's very close to a lot of other sights in Rome). This stunning architectural design is a pilgrimage site for Catholics and non-Catholics alike, so no matter what your beliefs, have a mosey around and explore.

Gaze Upon the Work of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel

Another Vatican City must-see is the incredible Sistine Chapel (especially for any history buffs or art lovers - you know who you are). The Chapel is known for its extremely high ceilings (a nervous 20m!) and the detailed masterpieces on the ceiling that were created by Michelangelo back in 1508.

Get Lost in Rome's Narrow Cobblestone Streets

Rome is known for having gorgeous, cobblestone streets that are filled with boutiques, cafes, restaurants and gelato bars. Clear an afternoon to relax, meander and discover the hidden gems and delicious treats around town.

Enjoy the Captivating Pantheon

Located just a short walk from the Colosseum, the Pantheon is another one to explore if you're interested in ancient Roman history. First created as a temple to all gods, the Pantheon still draws a large number of tourists daily because of its remarkable design and sheer size. Huge marble columns guard the outside while the breathtaking architecture inside is said to symbolise the arched vault of the heavens. Don't forget to look up!

Things To Do In Rome

Climb the Spanish Steps

The Spanish Steps have featured in many films and are known as the widest stairway in Europe. These stairs climb between the Piazza di Spagna and Piazza Trinita dei Monti, making them perfect for enjoying the views of Rome from above, including the lower Fontana della Barcaccia. Head to Rome in Spring to see the stairs in come to life with gorgeous floral trees lining the sides.
