Layering Tips

Layering your clothing is essential to maximize your comfort in the outdoors. This simple concept allows you to make quick adjustments based on your activity level and changes in the weather.

Each layer has a function. The base layer manages moisture; the mid layer protects you from the cold; the outer layer shields you from wind and rain. You simply add or subtract layers as needed.

Base layer

  • Guarantees freedom of movement
  • Protects from external temperatures and retains body heat
  • Avoids becoming damp
  • Has vapour-transfer ability
  • Possesses maximum warmth-to-weight ratio

Mid layer

  • Comfortably fits over baselayer
  • Allows natural, dynamic movement
  • Wicks, breathes and retains a minimum amount of water
  • Remains warm (or cool) when wet
  • Provides a barrier against wind

Outer layer

  • Comfortably fits over base and mid layers
  • Allows natural, dynamic movement
  • 100% waterproof and/or windproof
  • Allows rapid breathability of body vapour and retains a minimum amount of water

Three Key Elements of Outdoor Comfort

1. Be weight conscious -- wear lightweight,
current-technology fabrics specifically designed for outdoor use.

2. Integrated fit -- Mountain Designs
clothing systems have been designed to integrate and allow dynamic movement, even when wearing many layers. Always try on the full system.

3. Expect to be comfortable -- Our garments and their fabric functions are designed to appeal to your sense of comfort. You will feel comfortable if your skin is warm (or cool) and dry.
